First South Asian LGBTI Sports Festival

October 12-14, 2012

Dasharath Rangashala Stadium & National Theater Hall

In what is a ‘first’ for South Asia, Nepal will be holding a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) sports festival at the Dasharath Rangashala Stadium and the National Theater Hall in Kathmandu from October 12 to 14.

The festival seeks to make people aware about human rights of the LGBTI community members who face major societal stigma and discrimination.  This unique sporting and social awareness event aims to prove that sexual and gender minority individuals are proud members of society and can also take part in mainstream activities such as sports.

The South Asian LGBTI sports festival is being organized by the Blue Diamond Society (BDS), Nepal’s largest human rights organization that works to empower the marginalized community comprising 10% of the national population.Major support has been provided by the Nepal Sports Foundation, the Australian Embassy, and the American Embassy.

The sports festival will feature more than ten group and individual events such as karate, track running, football, volleyball, and long jump.  There will also be a 4k “Fun Run” for everyone.

National players like Hari Khadka, Sangina Vaidya, Neru Thapa, and Rahul B.K. along with American Olympian Greg Louganis, an openly gay and HIV positive athlete who won a total of four gold medals in diving in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics will be participating.
